upgrading from fp 2002 to fp 2003

M

M Simonov

I'm thinking of upgrading to fp 2003 from fp 2002. 1.)Is
it worth it? 2.) Do I have to republish all of the sites I
built in fp2002? 3.) Is it true that in FP 2003 you no
longer have to publish to a server with FP extensions.?
Any other comments or insights would be appreciated.

1. If you want to use 2003 features that are not
available in 2002, yes.
2. No. Only if you change something
3. No. Extensions are still required for components
that require them. The 2002 extensions are the newest version.

Steve, thanks for your reply. Several of my sites are
updated weekly so does that mean when I do changes after
installing FP 2003 I will have to republish everything
once and then after that it will just publish changes as
usual.

Just continue using "Publish changed pages only"

Actually, any time you upgrade or install or reinstall FP, you need to do a
full publish the first time to get the webs back in synch.

I'm thinking of upgrading to fp 2003 from fp 2002.
1.)Is it worth it?

In almost every case, yes. FP2003 is the most improved
version in quite a while, and has something for almost
everyone.
2.) Do I have to republish all of the sites I built in
fp2002?

No.

3.) Is it true that in FP 2003 you no longer have to
publish to a server with FP extensions.?

Maybe. FrontPage does a pretty good job of publishing
incrementally to an FTP server. However, I've seen some
problems reported when the local time on the FTP server
and the local time on the publishing PC are different.

Sorry to beat this to death, but I'm also considering upgrading to fp 2003
and I'm still unclear on the server extensions issue.

Does an ISP have to have server extensions specifically for fp 2003 (and if
so, what's a good ISP?).

Thomas A. Rowe

There are NO FP2003 extensions. FP2003 will use FP2000 or FP2002 extensions.
However to use some of the new FP2003 features, you site must be hosted on a
Windows 2003 IIS6 server.

Thanks Thomas. I gather that means I can stay with the ISP I have now where
I'm running fp2002. And I can switch to fp 2003 and all should be good (with
the exception of some advanced stuff like xml that I won't be using anyhow)?

Thomas A. Rowe

Correct.

Thanks Tom,
Didn't know that. I assumed that all
of the needed info was contained within the individual web.
