If I buy a notebook that I like that will have XP Home pre-installed, is
there a lower cost way of upgrading it to XP Pro? Anyone know what that
might cost and if problems are likely to occur in the upgrade?

I am interested because I would like to be able to remotely fully control my
desktop PC that is also running XP Home.

Thanks.

Their is no cost savings going from home to pro, it's whatever xp pro
upgrade is going for.
If you want to remote control your computer for free try:
www.tridiavnc.com

The cheapest method would be to buy the computer with Pro installed, or to
buy the upgrade from the manufacturer, if it's available.

Otherwise, you'd have to buy the retail upgrade.

Aha! I did not know that. Thanks.

Rather than go through the hassle of upgrading to Pro, is there some cheap
(or free) software that will let me do it?

Thanks.

Works just fine for me. A little slower than remote desktop, but works fine.

That would need Pro on the desktop which you want to control, rather
than the laptop.

You have to buy the regular XP Pro Upgrade CD (though its box makes no
mention of upgrading Home) - cost around $150
