I have a root domain (A) and a child domain (B.A)

A is mixed mode windows 2000 (going to be native mode in about 2
weeks)
B is Native Mode windows 2000 and hosts Exchange

Can I upgrade B to 2003 before i upgrade A? To upgrade B, I know I
have to upgrade Exchange first before the OS but once i do that, can i
upgrade B to windows 2003? (all servers and DCs)

thanks in advance,

Wilson

Wilson yes you can, But you have to upgrade the schema to prepare for
Windows Server 2003 Domain Controllers. This operation requires an account
in Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins.

Thanks Chris,

Just to clarify, I need to do the following?
1. Use an account that is Enterprise and Schema admin
2. adprep /forestprep (on the root)
3. wait for replication
4. adprep /domainprep (on root and child domain)
5. Wait for replication
6. apply any exchange or windows hotfixes for upgrade on child domain only.
7. upgrade exchange in place to exchange 2003
8. upgrade child domain DC in place to windows 2003
9. upgrade child domain's exchange server OS to windows 2003.
10. when ready start upgrading the root domain's DC to windows 2003

Does that sound about right?
Wilson
