upgrading 98 to xp

i tried to upgrade 98 to xp home edition and it comes up with a box saying
windows 98 cannnot be upgraded to xp home edition yet it is possible. it then
says i need the latest install updates which i downloaded but it still dosent
work. is this a common problem?

You probably acquired an "OEM Version" of Windows XP.
That version cannot perform an upgrade over an existing
Windows installation. It must be installed "clean" on a reformatted
drive or partition. Only a "Retail Version" of Windows XP can
upgrade over an existing Windows installation.
