Upgradin Windows XP Home Edition to Professional

Does anyone know how to upgrade from Home Edition to
Professional without having to boot from the CD and losing
all the programs stored on the computer. My setup screen
says I have a newer version of XP than what is on the CD.
I only have Home 2002 and I want Professional 2002

You'll either need to uninstall SP2 before attempting the upgrade,
or try slipstreaming SP2 into the upgrade.

The issue in your case is not simply that you want to upgrade
from Home to Professional. Presumably you have SP2 installed, and
your XP Professional Upgrade is without it, so is an older
version that what's installed.

If I'm right, you have two choices:

1. Uninstall SP2, do the upgrade, then reinstall SP2.

2. Create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including
SP2 and use it. See

You will have installed SP1 or SP2 on your Home system, and you need a
Pro Upgrade CD that is also at that level. Pro CDs with SP2 included
are coming through, or you can 'slipstream' a full SP2 from a CD of it
in with an older Pro Upgrade CD to make one that will work - you then
run it *from* the Home system, do not boot it direct

The "Replacement" retail SP2 are already available here in the US.
I had a customer who picked up a copy a few days ago. It's hard
not to notice the packaging changes. There is a fairly large "Triangle"
banner on corner of the box indicating Service Pack 2 included.
