Upgrades getting too automatic

Something is screwed up on my Windows Update set-up.

I used to have it so that MS would ASK me if I wanted to d/l/install the
upgrades.

Lately, it seems to d/l them automatically and asks me if I want to install
it.

How do I go back to the first set-up.

In particular, I don't want to move to IE 7.0 as I don't think it runs
smoothly yet (based on what I'm reading in the newsgroups)

I TRIED. But every choice is greyed out. Ii looks like the first one is
checked but I want the third choice. But I can't change it.

Suggestions??

Temp solution - when asked about installing updates, select "custom"
install - you will be presented with a list of the updates and given the
option to deselect - if you elect to deselect an update(s), you will also be
given the option not to be "reminded" of those updates again.

Are there any Group Policy settings turned on. What XP version do you have?
Is this a standalone PC?

This is a standalone laptop. I do have a desktop and I connect to the
internet via router.

Some files are networked.

Not sure what you mean by Group Policies.

How can I check.

I am the only user. However, I have connected to the network at work (must
run Clean Access for that)

Need to know what version of XP you have XP Home or XP Pro.

Do you have gpedit.msc?
