Upgraded PPT cannot access files modified under earlier version

I manage a small office with several Dell machines connected to a server.

A presentation created last year on Computer #1 in Powerpoint 2003 and saved
on our server was recently called up by another employee on Computer #2,
modified using Powerpoint 2000 and resaved. Now Computer #1 using the 2003
version of PPT cannot open the file as modified by Computer #2 with the 2000
version of PPT. Error message reads "Cannot open file" and Help suggests
that it was saved as something other than Powerpoint..

Computer #2 can reopen the modified file without problems.

Computer #1 can open other 2000 version files made on other computers in
prior years and saved to the server without problems. So it is not an issue
of the 2003 version not being able to read 2000 version files, it is just
files modified by Computer #2.

Another older computer configured the same as Computer 2 received a PPT
2003 Upgrade; it now behaves the same as Computer #1 and cannot open the
file. If we upgrade Computer#2, we fear that we will never be able to access
the file again. So an Upgrade is not the issue.

Machines involved:

Computer #1: 2004 Dell OptiPlex GX270T Win EP Pro (SP 1) / MS Office 2003 Pro
Computer #2: 2002 Dell Latitude C400 MS Small office XP / Win 2000 (SP 2)

Is there an incompatibility between MS Small Office and MS Office Pro?

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.
