Office Small Bus 2003 can't open PPT; earlier version can. Why?

I have been given a Powerpoint PPT file which Powerpoint Small Business 2003
cannot open (says it can't read the file). Windows Explorer on this machine
does show a preview view (the 1st slide).

Both Powerpoint 2000 and Powerpoint XP can read it.

Opening the file in Powerpoint XP and just saving it as a new name yields a
file that Powerpoint SB 2003 can open.

Any clues? Office SB 2003 is fully installed, and "repairing" office does
not help.
