All,
I have Win XP Home on my LapTop. I have Win XP
Proffesional on my Desktop at home. Can I install the XP
Proff on my laptop as an upgrade? Will this be allowed, in
terms of licensing etc. Or will I have to call Microsoft
first.
Generally is the upgrade from Home to Proffessionsl
version pretty smooth?

Any help is appreciated
Jawahar

NO! The license for the desktop is for ONE only. Also, if the desktop XP
version is OEM, then the license in forever tided to the desktop and by the
licensing agreement (EULA) can not be transferred.

Also, OEM versions of XP can not be used to "upgrade".

However, if the desktop XP version is RETAIL then you can call Microsoft and
purchase a second license for your laptop.

Every Windows version had a license which only permitted the Windows to be
installed on ONE PC at a time. Only now with XP, Microsoft has an method of
enforcing this requirement (product activations).

No. The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one license) for
each computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows
3.1. The only thing new with XP is that there's now an
enforcement mechanism.
