Upgrade w98 to xp home

What should be known before upgrading my w98 system to xp
home (software or hardware considerations). I know that
is pretty broad, but I have no prior experience doing
this.

Thanks in advance any help that you give.

Before upgrading any existing Windows installation, it would be prudent to
run the Upgrade Advisor for Windows XP. This tool will report what hardware
or software may be incompatible with Windows XP. If you follow the Upgrade
Advisor's recommendations, you should not have any problem upgrading to
Windows XP.

If you fail to utilize the Upgrade Advisor, you may run into incompatibility issues.
Just inserting the Windows XP Upgrade CD in the CD Drive and selecting
"upgrade" is not going to give you the desired result. You must "prepare and
plan" your computer before beginning the upgrade process.

It is imperative that you have the latest BIOS update installed. Visit the support
website of the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard for instructions
on updating your computer's BIOS.

Also, physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware devices,
especially USB devices (not including your mouse, keyboard or
monitor). Uninstall any antivirus program, too!

Most importantly, it would be prudent to perform a backup of
any data files you have, just in case a problem should occur.

Important: When you are ready to upgrade to Windows XP,
make sure to select the default "Upgrade" option
during the initial setup phase. Do not select the
alternative "New Installation" option!

Don't do it. Do a clean install.

You're right here. A clean install of Windows XP can be done with the Upgrd.
CD-ROM, just have the Win98 CD-ROM handy for 'verification'.

Note:

He should have a look at these:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx for hardware compatibility
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/howto/gettingstarted/guide/default.asp
for tips and links to further info on installing.

Some guy who calls himself "Black Viper" has a knock-up website on WindowsXP
with lots of installing screenshots and info:

http://www.blkviper.com/index.html

What the Microsoft website may not make clear is that he can use an upgrade
verison of WinXP Home to do a full clean installation of Windows on a even a
blank unpartitioned unformatted harddrive. The installation process can
partition and format as he wills. So he shouldn't be deterred from doing a
clean install if he can. He should remember to back up important documents
because once one wipes a partition or reformat it's no regrets to what was
on there already.

He will want a bit of horse power to run WinXP. A PII 300 MHz and up and
128MB of RAM at least for web work, office work and the occasional
multimedia and he will be happy. It will run on a Pentium 233 with 64MB but
like molasses with all the writing to disk pagefile and he would be happier
with Win98. For the latest games he will want a PIII or PIV or equivalent
and 256MB of RAM and up to be happy with WinXP. If his hardware doesn't meet
that then he should stick with Win98.

First check that you have adequate hardware - I would regard a minimal
level to be worth it as about 192MB RAM (usually meaning 256) around a
400MHz CPU and 5GB of free hard disk space.

Then Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
