Upgrade vs. Full Version, and WinME CD

I want to move from WinME on an emachine to WinXP Pro. Don't know if I can use the Upgrade version or have to buy the Full Version. I know I need my installation CD from WinME to upgrade to XP Pro, but emachines only come with a Restore CD, not an OS CD. Can I use this Restore CD in the upgrade steps of WinXP?

The system restore cd wont be needed in the upgrade, and xp upgrad
will install ok.Remember though,if you ever upgrade the motherboard t
a diffrent type, the ME cds will be no good, hence, installing the xp upgrad
wont work without a hd with ME on it.In the long run a full version might b
the wise solution.

I suppose by all of that you mean you want to install CLEANLY? Not really
"upgrade" (which you can do if your Windows ME is functional on said
computer now..) - but erase and start over?

If so, you would likely be better off buying a FULL RETAIL version of
Windows XP. It costs a little more, but can follow you around a bit better
and it doesn't care what OS you USED to have for a clean installation.

Greetings --

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using the
Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and
format partitions as part of the installation process.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. The Upgrade CD checks to
see if a qualifying OS is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks
you to insert the installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately,
an OEM "Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must
have a true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and
*.cab files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to perform a
clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case,
there's no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD,
because the installation routing "remembers" that you started from
within the qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but
you get the same results: a clean installation of WinXP.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.

Yes, you can use that CD for the install ( which I
believe you don't actually need). Yes, you need to buy
the Upgrade version of WindowsXP. Hint: When you try
to "format" (clean your entire Harddrive) and reinstall
XP on your computer, you will have to go through the time
to install ME first, then install XP second, because XP
is only an upgrade. So, to save future time spent with a
new install, you may consider the Full (Retail) version
of XP. Also, you may only want to purchase the Home
version of XP not the Professional. It has more than you
probably need in an OS (Operating System).

You wall not be able to use the eMachines restore media to clean install
using the upgrade version. Also any applications installed from the restore
media will not be available.
You will need to use the full version to do a clean install without
restoring the system first.
Have you considered just purchasing an inexpensive system with XP
pre-installed. When you factor in the cost of the full version, upgraded AV
and CD burning software, etc. the costs are comparable.
You could inexpensively network the two systems as an extra advantage.
