Upgrade to XP Pro

Will upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro overwrite my existing system? Will I
lose everything loaded currently? Is upgrading merely an add-on, or a
complete operating system load?

You will not lose the data if you upgrade, if the upgrade goes as it should,
but you should always backup your important files when doing any kind of
process as intensive as an upgrade. A power outage would cause a loss of
data if it occurred during the upgrade. So be smart and backup before
upgrading.
Also make sure you choose to upgrade and not reinstall, plus you can only
upgrade with the retail versions of XP, OEM version will only do clean
installs.

A properly executed upgrade will overwrite the pre-existing OS, but it
shouldn't affect applications or data files.

Will I
lose everything loaded currently?

Not if the upgrade is performed correctly. Nevertheless, it's always a
good idea to backup any important data beforehand, just in case.

Is upgrading merely an add-on,

No.

or a
complete operating system load?

Yes.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things can
go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all important
to you, back it up before proceeding.

The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, almost always
goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.
