upgrade to xp from me

I want to upgrade a family members pc from me to xp. I purchased xp home from
an amazon.com vender (edirectsoftware) for 60$ but the cd says for use with
gateway pc only (my mom has a 6000 series compaq) and it says clean install
only: that I must uninstall any previous OS first. The tech support from
edirect told me I would not have any issues but now I don't know if I should
proceed with the upgrade from this CD. Can anyone give me some advice?

Get your money back and get a retail upgrade version or at the very least
the generic non-branded OEM. The version you purchased may not be able to
receive updates and is not meant to be resold. This OEM version will also
not allow you to upgrade and keep your family members information, it will
only do clean installs.
But first look over the links listed below to make sure the system is even
suitable for upgrading to XP.

If the Gateway OEM CD didn't come with a Gateway PC, you purchased
pirated (stolen, to be blunt) software. The first clue to this should
have been the ridiculously low, too-good-to-be-true price. In a way,
you're a victim of your own parsimony.

You can try getting a refund from the vendor, and involving various law
enforcement agencies, but, ultimately, you're going to have to go to a
legitimate store and buy a legitimate WinXP license.

Yes, the copy of XP that you have is a pirate copy. I really would recommend
reporting it to Microsoft and to law enforcement.
