windows xp he to pro upgrade problems

Hi:

I have an eMachines PC which was purchased w/Windows xp home edition
pre-installed.
It is current on all windows service packs/patches, incl SP2. I need to
upgrade it to Windows XP professional, to be able to join it to our domain.
I -need to be able to join the domain, to use NT integrated security for
several tasks.

So I bought a Windows XP professional upgrade, in the box & everything. It
says it will upgrade users of XP home edition, presumably to professional.

So I put in the CD, and it says the OS on the machine is newer than the
version on the CD, and that my only option is to boot from the CD and do a
clean install of the new OS, but I'll lose all the computers settings, which
is completely unacceptable. It won't let me proceed with the upgrade.

So, what's the deal ? How can I upgrade this OS ?

thanks,

Steve

Unless SP2 is integrated into XP Pro, then one cannot
upgrade an existing XP Home w/SP2 installation using
a non-SP2 version of XP Pro. What you need to do is
create a SP2 "slipstreamed" version of XP Pro, then use
the new CD to upgrade over XP Home w/SP2.

You have two options:

1. Uninstall SP2 from XP Home, then upgrade to XP Pro.

or

2. Create a SP2 slipstreamed version of XP Pro (preferred)
and use the new XP Pro w/SP2 to upgrade.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

I am running into the same problem (eMachine with Win XP Home, SP2).
However, the MSFT Win XP Professional Upgrade CD that I got has SP2
integrated. So when I put in the upgrade CD, I get to a point where it asks
me if I'd like to get a dynamic update of files. When I clicked yes, it
began a download process, and then rebooted my machine. However, during the
continuation of the setup process, I got an error message saying that a
particular file in Windows could not recognize a certain file. So it asked
me to insert the Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD, which I don't
have... .just the Win XP Pro upgrade CD.

Now I can't even boot from safe mode. It appears that my only option is to
put in the restore DVD, which would ultimately wipe out all data on my hard
drive. And I have some important files that I haven't backed up (yet).

Am I in trouble here?

Thanks!

I wouldn't - that is just looking for (probably non-eistent) updates for
the setup program itself. Cancel and carry on

The problem is still that I can't go back to a previous safe mode of Win XP
HE. The setup process still is asking me to insert the Windows XP Pro
Service Pack 2 CD. When inserting the Win XP Pro upgrade CD, that doesn't
work.

So what can I do?

The setup stops to this message:

Windows could not start because the follow file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll

Hardware Access Layer? How can I find this DLL? And if I can find it, how
do I access (DOS prompt isn't even available) my hard drive to copy onto
it....?

Misleading. That means a corrupt boot.ini file, so it is looking for
Windows in the wrong place, hal just happens to be the first file looked
for
You have to rebuild boot.ini - either from the R boot with BootCfg
/Rebuild or by manual editing
