Upgrade to XP, can't detect modem

Hi,

I've recently upgraded my PC from Windows 98 to XP. When I tried to connect
to the Internet via dial-up, it said that the modem can't be detected or the
port was closed. I check the COM ports, and they were all enabled. Neither
were there any conflicts between the ports. However, the modem (an internal
modem) can't be detected by my computer. I tried installing it, but still I
can't connect to the Internet.

Help?

Its probably a legacy modem that is no longer supported. Time to get a new
one...

Does the modem show up in Device Manager? If not:

Open the computer (while it's off!) and reseat the modem. Restart the
computer. Is it found? If not, shut down and put the modem in a
different PCI slot. Is it found? If not, the modem has probably failed.
Replace it. You can get a decent modem for around $25 USD.
