Internal Notebook Modem problem

I have a pre-installed SmartLink 56k Modem on my custom
built notebook computer. It appears to be installed
correctly in the control panel as I am able to 'Query'
the modem fine, and see that it is assigned to COM3.
However in Setup Internet Connection Wizard AND the setup
software for another ISP, neither can find an installed
modem.

I have managed to setup the Microsoft Fax software
correctly using this modem, so why can't it be recognised
when trying to setup a dial-up connection??

Reason I thought it may be a COM port problem is that no
COM ports appear in Device Manager under 'Ports'. Only
the printer LPT port is shown even though the modem shows
it is assigned to COM 3.

I have tried updating drivers, uninstalling the modem and
reinstalling it to no avail. Any help with this matter would be
GREATLY appreciated.

Kind Regards.

If there is fax software running, the com port is busy. Disable the fax
from task manager, then try finding the modem again.

Good hint.

Perhaps the modem would show up again if the fax is not set to
accept incoming faxes.

The Fax software is just microsoft fax and is setup for outgoing faxes only.
Plus I installed fax after I had this problem on dial-up as an extra test to
see if IT would detect it and it did... Any other ideas? I am lost!

Unfortunately, the fax software is only setup for outgoing faxes and was
setup after this problem in order to test if IT would detect the modem and it
did. Any other ideas? I am totally lost!

Sam,

have you asked the manufacturer of the computer? What do they
say?

One other hint is the very first checkbox on
http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm. Check it, then scroll down
to read the result.
