Upgrade to Vista

I have just received my copy of RC1 and looking forward to the improvements
from the previous beta! Just a quick question. I installed the previous beta
on a seperate hard drive. So I have XP on one hard drive and Vista on the
other. I want to really get rid of XP soon so I can use the XP hard drive as
storage for another computer in the house. However If I install RC1 on the
Vista hard drive will I have to buy the full version when it comes out? Or do
I need to keep XP so i can qualify for an upgrade and not pay the extra?

Hope this makes sense

Hi Luke,

The preview versions will not qualify a system for upgrades, you would still
need the full version. For upgrades, you would need the XP installation or
CD.

Rick,

Sorry for the "question already answered" post, but just to confirm your
response..

Testers on the RC1 build will need to purchase the full version of Windows
Vista and can upgrade from RC1 on the system, but will need the Windows XP CD
at some point during the installation for verification of the upgrade.
Correct?

Anyone know prices on the upgrade to the Ultimate edition?

I would not be so quick to get rid of XP.

As to buying an upgrade vs. full product, presumably if you have the XP
CD, it won't matter whether or not XP is actually installed on your
computer.

Hi Luke,

The copies of Vista that you have do not qualify for Upgrades at upgrade
pricing. It is Microsoft Windows previous operating systems' CD
installations and CDs that qualify you for upgrade pricing.

I thought that would be the case. I have a 40Gb with XP and a 200Gb with
Vista. (The 200Gb is the one i bought recently for vista) The thing is, is
that 40Gb is getting to small but while testing vista I have been using XP as
my main use of OS. This is mainly because I have not got round to getting
extra ram to increase the 512mb already in the machine. I need to really add
another gig to it as the performance was a bit sluggish. Is RC1 better for
performace?

I think I will just keep XP on there and I assume i can then pick what hard
drive I want to install vista on when it comes to the upgrade as I want it on
the 200gb hard drive?

Many thanks for your comments.

Slightly OT but does anyone have the feeling that because XP has been out
for 6 years people will not like the change? I help look after half a dozen
companies and I feel that they are set in their ways with XP. I think they
may get a scary shock when it comes to getting new desktops/laptops when it
has vista installed.

Hi Luke,

I have a computer with an Intel Celeron-D 2.93 Ghz Processor and 2
GBytes of Physical Ram installed and Windows Vista Ultimate RC2 works great
in this machine. However a lot of Companies have failed to release drivers
for Vista.

I would keep Windows XP, for awhile, until all Companies have Drivers
out for your Devices in your computer.

You mentioned you have Windows Vista installed on a 200 GB Hard Drive.
If you are just using one partition on that Hard Drive, it is a big mistake.
Why? If you have to run Chkdsk, it would take a long time. And if you need
to Defragment the Hard Drive, that will take a long time also.

Repartition the Hard Drive into smaller partitions of 40 GB in size.
