Is there a way to keep from trashing the MBR when upgrading from XP to
VIsta? I don't want to loose my dual boot with Linux.

nope.. vista will add its own ...that will include itself and XP and ignore
linux...
(how Microsoft is that? lol)

then you will have to repair the linux one so all 3 OS can work...

for grub or lilo repairs asks a linux newsgroup....

BE WARNED: XP and Vista dualboot have a problem MS never fixed:
whenever you boot into xp the vista restore points and "old versions of
files" will be lost...
unless you have ultimate (and I think buisness) that has bitlocker and then
you would have
to encrypt your partiton.
Welcome to the nightmare called vista!

A proposition. Backup all your data, wipe the HDD clean and reinstall Linux
on the whole HDD. Then, download VMWare server for Linux (you may have to
patch your Kernel but there's plenty of help on the web on how to do
this)and you can then create two virtual disks to run both Vista and XP
within a window in Linux. Beats dual-boot into a cocked hat because you
don't have to restart the machine to switch OS's....

have you looked into
Microsoft's virtual pc 2007?

the vm will be far slower...

No it's not - My VMWare server running XP under Kubuntu 6.10 is no
slower than running XP natively on the same machine....in fact when it's
maximised I really can't tell that XP is not the only OS installed on
the HDD...

I have many VM's with vmware server (free).

I have used virtual machines for years!

Now I have a single core cpu at 2.6 GHz and 1.25 gb of ram....

I can assure you that there is a difference.. a big one!

perhaps you have a dual core CPU and you don't see much speed difference?
I use XP as the host machine.. I have never tried linux as the host..
perhaps there is a difference there?

what's your machine specs?

2.6 GHz Pentium 4 and 1 GB RAM and I can assure *YOU* that there is no
appreciable difference in speed at all between running XP in VMWare
Server running on Kubuntu to running XP as the sole OS installed on that
machine....
