Upgrade to Vista from XP Media Center

I'd like to upgrade to Vista Business from XP Media Center but the upgrade
disk I'm using says that isn't possible.

Is there some way to trick the system into doing it or will I have to
convert the XP Media Center to XP Professional? How do I do that if it's
necessary?

Business does not contain the "Media Center" feature. Only Premium and
Ultimate have this. If you no longer require "Media Center" then I have
heard that there is a way to do a clean install with an upgrade version
of Vista.

And the way to do that is first back up everything. Then set the BIOS to
boot from the DVDROM. After Vista formats the drive, choose "30 day
trial". Once Vista loads, reboot and choose "update" and it will think
it's updating itself.

That's correct. WinXP MCE to Vista Business isn't a supported upgrade
path; you'd have to format the hard drive and perform a clean
installation of Vista Business.

To transition from WinXP MCE to WinXP Pro is a downgrade and would
require a format and clean installation of WinXP Pro.

Is there any particular reason you don't want to upgrade WinXP MCE to
the support Vista Ultimate?

Bruce, the full story is this:

I purchased a new laptop sometime ago believeing it to be XP Pro. It had the
offer of a free upgrade to Vista attached to it. I submitted the paperwork
to the upgrade agents but continued to use my old laptop for the time being.

The upgrade discs finally arrived - that's another story! - at which point
the upgrade process on the new laptop seems to proceed well. at the very end
of the install I get the message that as I have XP MCE I cannot upgrade to
Vista Business.

So it seems that my only choice is to ditch the free Vista upgrade and
purchase an upgrade to Vista Ultimate - ey expensive here in UK.

Yes, it would seem that you'd been mislead, originally. But, do you
really need all of Vista Ultimate's features? I forgot to mention, in
my last post, that WinXP MCE can also be upgraded to Vista Home Premium.
Would this meet your needs? If so, it'd be a bit less dear than Ultimate.

I take your point Bruce - but the disk I have received was FREE - so am
reluctant to pay for something else.

I've taken the issue up with the upgrade agent and have given them the
relevant Product Codes and COA's. Let's hope they will have a solution.

Quite understandable.

Good luck with that.
