boot past Welcome Screen then shuts down. Can only open in safe mode, any
ideas ??? Please help got so much work to complete....

Clean install, there no need to have ME installed, just have cd avilable
when win complains it cannot find qualifying app
Then install chipset and other drivers from hw manu, dont rely on win
default drivers

No need? Except perhaps for the hours and hours and hours of work
that it may take to reinstall all of the application programs,
reconfigure them, download and install any updates for them, and
restore the user data files from backups?

It would take me a minimum of 3 full days work (8 hours per day) to
reinstall everything that I have currently installed onto this box.
That is after I find the original CDs and license nubmers for a lot of
the stuff.

Start it up in Safe Mode.

Right-click on My Computer and select Manage.
Expand the Event Viewer category (click on the + sign) and browse
through each of the 3 sub-categories looking for error or problem
records whose date and time stamp corresponds to your attempts to boot
up normally.

Double click on an event record to see the details of that event.

Another thing to try. Boot your computer to "Safe mode with
networking" and then go to the Windows Update site and get the
critical updates for your computer. The update process may sort
things out for you.

Good luck

Theres no need to have the Q product installed in order to upgrade, as you
well know.
Whether its the most convenient method is a different matter, however an in
place upgrade of a win9* sys to an NT based system doesnt allways proceed
without problems.
I most assume from your comments that you have no imaging backups.

Upgrades to Windows XP from 9x versions go well at least 95% of the
time.

I have never repeat never had a system brought into my shop because of
a failed upgrade to Windows XP.

And in the (unlikely) event that an upgrade does go bad the option to
wipe it out and do a clean install is still there.
