Upgrade mobo and cpu

C

Cesar

Hi,

about 2 years ago I build myself a system.

this is what I have so far.

900 mhz abit kt7
Abit KT7
40 GB Maxtor
256 sdram
tnt2 nvidia 64 mb

Now, what I would like to upgrade is only the mobo and cpu. I like Athlon.
CPU speed should be about 2.5 Ghz. any good combo out there?

Thanks for your time reading this.

Cesar.

You should note that you will be very limited in the mobo that you can buy
unless you upgrade your memory to DDR. Just though you might want to factor
that in. I buy from newegg, but you can shop around.

Hi,

I built practically the same system I think 3 years ago:
Abit KT7-Raid
Athlon 900
256 mb of SDRAM PC100
IBM 40 gig 7200 rpm hdd
ATI all in one 16mb RAM
Enlight 300W midtower case

It was a nice system 3 years ago and now I've upgraded to
a Biostar M7NCD ($55)
AMD XP2500 ($90)
256 mb DDR 3200
Asus 9200 8X AGP graphics card
120 gig WD 7200 rpm
Antec 350W midtower case
All parts bought at Newegg.com

Though I still admire the Athlon 900 and the Abit board for their solid
performance (even with a VIA chipset) I have to quickly admit that this new
combination is the difference between night and day to the former system
although I should put in some more RAM.
To give one example: opening a 130 mb psd file in Photoshop took the Athlon
900 1 min. 15 sec. To open it on the new system took less than 25 sec.

thanks but is the a Biostar M7NCD ($55) a good motherboard?

I usually heard ASUS, ABIT, SOYO but BIOSTAR? IS BIOSTAR better than
the abit?

one issue I had with the abit is that it would not detect my hp
scanner.

can you please gimme more real life info on this mobo? the price looks
good for me but may be to cheap for others?

Thanks,
Cesar

There are some SDR/DDR combo boards out there, but leave a bit to be
desired, so if you want a machine for the future, get a DDR only board
and RAM,

Biostar makes decent enough motherboards.

Are you on crack? Some of the best overclocking motherboards have come from
Abit...
one issue I had with the abit is that it would not detect my hp
scanner.

Why would that be a hardware issue? Sounds like a Windows issue.

If you'd like to get some other opinions of folks who have used the Biostar
M7NCD then go to Newegg and read the customer reviews of people who have
written in to what they think of it. For that matter you can read the
reviews of customers for dozens of their mbs. From those you should be able
to form a pretty decent opinion.

You will also have to buy DDR RAM to use with that CPU.

Are you sure? If you want (looking at the compatibility charts),
Hhoose a CPU compatible with a dual DDR/SDR Mobo, if the OP is
headstrong in keeping the SD Ram.

M7NCD Pro is a great board. The equivalent Shuttle board is great too.
Either one goes well with the 2500+ Barton.
