Upgrade from Win98 to WinXP?

O

Owlman

I bought a new Dell PC with Win XP earlier this year. I'm trying to
clean off the hard drives on my old Win98 machine. Can I take my
WinXP CD from the new machine and install XP on the old machine?

The reason I'm doing this is that my old PC had just developed SO many
problems over the years with Win98 that I want the next person that's
getting my machine to be able to use it properly without all my old
baggage.

Thanx for your help.

No. You'll have to go out and purchase a conventional
"retail version" of Windows XP for installation on your
other computer. The Dell Windows XP license is explicitly
tied to that specific Dell computer.

Please take a moment to read the Windows XP EULA.

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.
Click on "End-User License Agreement".

Nope, one copy of Windows, one computer. Always been that way. Besides
OEM copies, like with the DELL are tied to that computer and can never
be moved to another machine even if you get rid of that DELL. Read the
EULA.

No, you cannot do this. You'll need to purchase a separate WinXP
license for each computer on which you install it.

First of all, you have an OEM license for WinXP on the new PC.
An OEM version must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a
motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM license, once
installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under _any_
circumstances.

Secondly, as it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating
systems, it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and
U.S. copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if
not technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on
which it is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law
to determine final applicability in your locale.) The only way in
which WinXP licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows
is that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

No. The one that came with the Dell is an OEM system licensed solely
for use on that machine. It may not be transferred to another. And no
version is licensed anyway for use installation on more than one machine
at a time
