upgrade fatal error

Hi I recently upgraded a compaq computer from Win ME to WinXPhome,
everything went fine, when I reboot I now get an error message every time
"FATAL ERROR YOU HAVE TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER" after restart all is well.

How do I get that message to go away.

Whats the exact error message? Does the machine boot into safe mode? What
are the event IDs that accompany the error if you can see the event logs in
safe mode?
