Upgrade Error - File Missing - NO VIRUSES or malware

Have seen several posts with this exact problem but no solution. At the
beginning of the install (upgrade of 2000 Pro to XP Pro Retail), I get an
error that says a file cannot be copied or is missing. The file is always a
seemingly random filename with a .sys extension, file is not on CD and can't
google it. CD is brand new and is good. Computer is clean - no viruses or
malware, etc. I have run up against this in the past and have, after trying
many different ways, finally gotten it to go but not this time (In fact - it
has happened on a completely brand new hard drive from a scratch install - so
it wasn't a virus in that case for sure). Have tried another XP CD to check
and the same thing happens. I promise - I have no spyware, etc. on the
system and the CD is good (in fact, brand new and I upgraded my home computer
from 2000 with it to check (then installed Vista that was waiting to be
installed on it- I'm legal guys!! - except I found out that I screwed up and
couldn't upgrade the XP Pro to Vista Home Premium!)) Enough rambling! Thanks
in advance - and I would rather not have an answer than to have Andrew E.
reply!

I don't have any extra hardware; as far as the memory goes, I received this
error and had some new ram waiting to go in so I decided that this was a good
time to install it. I pulled out the old ram and installed the new, tried the
install again, got the same problem. I have a memory checker so I'll run it
tonight when I get home to see. I remember that the last time I ran into
this, someone told me to run a memory checker (which is why I have one now!)
and it checked out OK then and I suspect that it will on this computer too,
but you never know! Since I really haven't had much luck searching for a
solution and nobody has a "... oh yeah, you have to do this..." type of
answer, I am beginning to think it is something specific that I do or have on
my systems; as I said previously, I have run into this before on other
computers. Thanks for reminding me about the memory check. I wish I could
remember what I did the other times to get it to install - do they make a
memory checker for people?!!

Thanks,
Tony

Could be a faulty CD drive, any time I have seen missing files off a CD,
replacing the CD drive fixed it. CD drives have a limited life, the laser
deteriorates or fills up with dust or something.

Filenames will not get you anywhere, they are stored in compressed form with
a different extension on the CD and are renamed at installation.

Took that out of the equation already - have 2 CD drives (1 only a month
old), got the same error on each. Also tried installing from the Hard drive
and get the same error. Ram also tested good, as I figured it would. This is
really frustrating! It does appear that it is the very last step of the
"Copying Files" stage. I skipped this file to see what would happen next and
that skipped file was the last one it needed to copy (or so it said!). It
rebooted, but wouldn't really start the next phase of the install because it
was missing that file!! I think I am going to look through the CAB files and
see if I can find that file and extract it though I don't think that is going
to work either. Thanks for the help.
