Upgrade advisor still running after 5 hours

I Have Windows XP Media Centre 2004, with all updates installed, running on
Acer Aspire E650 XPMCE Intel Pentium D CPU 2x2.80Ghz 2 Gig Ram. Update
advisor fails to finish, just suts there for hours. Tried doing an upgrade
anyway of Vista Home Premium and only get past serial number and licence
agreement when it starts to scan system, then either locks up setup
application, or reboots without warning. Any ideas what next to get Vista
running

You don't really need a stupid upgrade advisor to check your
PC's speed. Its database will always lag behind hardware
announcement. :)
