I've bought a notebook with xp home (sp2) and i want to install xp pro on
it, so it can be used at work.
But i'm told that when you try to update the o/s, it will not work due to
the existing o/s being service packed.

Is there any way around this?
that is without having to download every driver etc for the notebook, and
then perform a install by booting from the cd?

An upgrade to Windows XP Pro is a smooth transition and will not affect your
current programs or files if you use the following procedure:

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive.

And then right after clicking upgrade, up pops a window saying that the o/s
being installed is older than the current version, and the installation is
being aborted!

The XP Pro upgrade CD should be at the same service pack level,
SP2, as your current XP Home installation. If you're using an
older upgrade CD, you need to "slipstream" the SP2 files into
the XP installation files. You then create a new installation
CD which contains SP2. Take a look here for the procedure:

Here are some of the files you'll need to obtain in order to
follow this procedure:

Then you need to create a new XP Pro Upgrade installation CD with
Service Pack 2 slipstreamed into it.
