updating windows xp

i updated windows xp on my computer without backing up my files on accident,
and now i can't get any of my documents or pictures. someone please help me
figure out a way to retreive all of these lost files.

*How* did you "update" Windows XP? What precisely did you do?

i just put it in the cd drive and updated windows xp not knowing that it
would delete all of my files. all of the previous programs are still there
but my files are lost. i would really like to know if there is any way that
i can retreive those files.

Are you saying you *upgraded* to Windows XP from some other Operating
system, or what?
