Updating the firmware in ASUS DRW-1608P drives

Mike Freeman

Config.
P5AD2-E Premium
Intel P4 3.4 GHZ
2 Gigs Ram
2-70 Gig SATA / Raid 1
ASUS - EAX800 graphics card
2-ASUS DWR-1608P drives

Problem every time I try to us the ASUS update software for the 1608Ps, this
is what I get:

/// DVD-ROM-RW Firmware Utility Ver2.18C

Detect the Intel's IDE driver
Start updating the device No.1.
Current Revision>> ASUS DRW-1608P 1.02 05/01/12
Current Signature = ASUS
Disc is inserted into DVD-RW.
Please eject a disc.
Start updating the device No.2.
The F/W scramble mode mismatches the choosen F/W file.
Update program is terminated by occuring an error.

Any ideas? I do not have a disk in either drive contrary to what the
install program says.

Appreciate any feedback.

The instructions I have read on this type of process usually say:
Drive Must be MASTER
Drive must be only drive on cable.

IE check instructions.

Try downloaded the update file again - it could have been corrupted.

If you are unable to make any progress, try posting over
on club.cdfreaks.com . The forums there are populated by
firmware hackers, who know how to get a drive flashed.

I recommend you use a hex editor and examine the text strings
in the UPR9AS.exe flasher. One thing I noticed is:

"Auto insert notification" is enabled at the target DVD-RW
drive. Please disable "Auto insert notification" by the
Device Manager of System properties and reboot your PC.
After that, re-exxecute this program"

Also, judging by other text strings in that executable,
the drive should be connected to a Southbridge port.

Some Asus flashers in the past, had a port number dependency,
but it sounds like your symptoms are related to something
else.

The "F/W scramble mode" refers to checksumming that has been
added to flashers, to prevent the good folks at cdfreaks from
upgrading drives. The Asus flasher is likely checking the
version strings, and is verifying the existing firmware is
for a DRW-1608P. If you have flashed some other code into
the drive, that could prevent the Asus flasher from updating
the drive.

I'm still waiting to read of a trouble free Asus flash
upgrade for their optical disk products :-( Asus strength
is not in the writing of software.

Good luck,
Paul
