When does Microsoft Word update page references made usign the cross
reference tool from the insert menu?

I have it based on a particular heading, when the heading moves to a new
page (The document grows before the heading) unless I right click and click
update it doesn't update itself...?

Will it update it all before sending it to the printer?

Thank you

There is a setting in Tools>Options>Print that controls whether fields are
updated when you print a document. Normally it should be set so that the
fields are updated so that the cross references will be updated when you
print (or print preview) the document.

Another way is to use Ctrl+A to select everything in the document and then
press F9.

It is recommended that you do a manual update so that you can make sure that
everything is OK before printing (Sometimes, because of heavy editing,
cross-references do not quite point to what they should...). To make your job
easier, go to Tools > Options... > View tab > and select "Always" for field
shading.
Now, in your document, cross-referenced materials (and any field, like page
numbers or automatic dates) will appear with a gray background (which does
not print...) so that they are easy to spot.
Do CTRL-A to select the whole document and do F9 to update all fields
(including any TOC or Index...) This does not update fields in
headers/footers. For that you must do a print preview (which will also update
all fields in the body), but make sure that "field updting before printing"
is on.
Fields update before printing if this option is activated in the Print
options dialog (From Tools > Options... > Print tab or from Print dialog >
Options button).
