Updating problem

Though I have an internet connection (via Road Runner),
when it tried to do an update, a message said that I did
NOT have a connection. E-mail came in and Messenger is
signed on AND I can 'surf') Just prior to the set-up
finishing, I got a Security warning that Giant
AntiSpyware (or something) was trying to access my pc and
it recommended that I block it. Which, I did.

Is that the reason that the update isn't working? Does
the Giant Anti-Spy thing NEED access in order for the
update to detect the connection?

Isn't that obvious, that if you want to open the window, you must first have
an access to it? ;-)
Yes, you have to give this application access in order to get the updates.
