Registery Entries Left Uncleaned after Removal

A GIANT scan of my system detected that 3
entries to the Register had been made by malware
called "SearchAssistant" and GIANT's menu
seemed to be asking me if I would like to continue
on with a fix by having them removed, to which I
replied "Yes". GIANT seemed to indicate that the
problem entries were fixed or removed, but I still
keep having an "About Blank" screen substituted
for the homepage I want. So I checked to see if
the Registry entries had been removed but they
had not. They were still in
"HKEY\...Current Version\Uninstall\..."
and although I'm considering deleting them
myself, I'm worried that this might have
some sort of unexpected disastrous effect
(even thought I Xcan see why it should).
I also tried a free MICROSOFT malware removal
tool, but it didn't seem to clean out these
registry entries either.
Can GIANT or the XP operating sys do anything
to help me prevent malware from being allowed
to inject takeover programs like browser help
objects or dlls into places like IE Explorer
and the Registet?. GIANT only seems to help
after the fact, and even then, doesn't seem
to clean out what it can identify in the
Register as malware. An owner should be able
to specify that no application of updates to the
Register or IE Explore are to be allowed
while being connected to the Internet, but
how can that be done by normal Microsoft XP
Software or something like GIANT?
