updating existing web site

G

Guest

I have been asked to update my church's web site, which was created in Front
Page and has since been updated with Dreamweaver. I will be using Front Page
2003, but have never really used it before. I went through the basic
Microsoft tutorial, and have played around with it a little, but I don't know
how to get an existing web site to my computer in order to edit it.
I believe I need to open it and publish it to my computer, but I don't know
how to do that. I was given a login name and password, but when I try to open
the web site, it seem the password may be wrong. No one I've spoken to seems
to know what the login name/password should be... the person updating it
before me (using Dreamweaver) didn't know anything about name/password.
I don't know enough about what I'm doing to even ask the right questions. =(
I have a disc with the original Front Page files on it, but my computer
can't read the images folder so I get no images. The disc does not contain a
web site file, just a plain folder with more folders and data inside it - it
looks to me like all the web site data, except the image folder seems to be
empty or corrupted.
If anyone can help me, or at least point me in a better direction, I'd
appreciate it.
Thanks.

No, not really.
I am not able to open the web site in Front Page... that is the first real
problem, I think. I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what.

What is the URL to the website?

The first thing you'll need to get is the un/pw and if no one knows what
they are you'll need to contact your web host service provider and get them
to change them to something you want...otherwise you're just spinning your
wheels.

Your website does not have FrontPage Server Extensions installed (FPSE) so
you cannot Publish via the http:// method, maybe this is what you have been
trying to do? You will have to use the FTP method or a third party FTP
program like CuteFTP or WS_ftp or whatever.

I finally got the correct password, and was able to connect to the server. I
have published the files to my computer now, so I should be able to do my
updates!
There were 3 files that I have not been able to copy to my computer. 2 are
files that start with .qmail - it says they are invalid. The other is a
folder called .panel and I'm sorry I've forgotten why it wouldn't copy over.

I don't have time to do anything with the files at the moment, since I have
to leave for a couple hours, but I wanted to let you know I appreciated your
help, and I've made progress!

Thanks again!

On Windows, filenames starting with a dot are invalid names, but it is
possible to use them with a little manipulation.
On Unix, filenames starting with a dot are valid, hidden files. They may
be system files like .htaccess and .htpasswd
