hello...
i want to add windows xp to a second hard drive and keep windows me on the
first hd. if i update the applicable drivers (audio driver, diagnostic
utilities, system BIOS, video driver, dell solution center) on the dell
support site for compatibility with xp, will that affect their compatibility
with windows me?

You cannot use Windows XP drivers with Windows ME.
Just install Windows XP on your second hard drive, then
visit the Dell support website to download the Windows XP
drivers for your Windows XP installation.

Yes. When you install Windows XP on your second drive,
it will automatically create a dual-boot loader, giving you
the option to boot to Windows ME or Windows XP. Just
be sure that you designate your second drive as the installation
target during setup.

There is also a very good Microsoft Page on Multi Booting with XP.

I commend you to read this before attempting your installation:

You may also consider looking at the Dell Website for your particular Model
of PC and download all WQindows XP drivers and extract them to a separate
folder on the Win Me partition. That way when files are requested during
device configuration [and they are not included in XP] then you can direct
the installation to 'look' into that folder.
