Updating Definitions

G

Gerry Cornell

When will the problem updating Windows Defender Definitions for
users of Windows Vista be fixed? The procedure for manually updating
is driving me round the bend. Also the Windows Update site keeps
prompting me to update after have updated until I have run Check for
Updates on the Microsoft Update site!

I'm not sure that this isn't fixed now--let me find the KB reference.

If you want an easier way to update in the meantime, go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/

And click on "32bit Definitions" under Windows Defender, unless you are
running the 64 bit version of Vista, in which case the 64bit Definitions
would be correct. If you are unsure of which to choose, choose the 32bit
version.

I believe Engel has just posted this, but here's Microsofts prescription for
this issue. I'll be interested to hear if this does not correct it in your
case:

Thanks Bill for the information.

I tried the fix and encountered all sorts of problems. The system
did not like the treatment. At one point it said Vista was not
activated. When I went to Activate it dumped me back at the Desktop
and said my Vista was not a legal copy. I rebooted and that horror
story disappeared. I have checked with Microsoft Update and it now
says that the only available updates are those I have decided not to
take. The Update History no longer exists but I believe that is a
direct result of renaming the Software Distribution folder. Please
confirm that this is as it should be?

I cannot of course check whether the problem is fixed until there is
a new Defintions update to download. My Defintions are up to date
and match those in the version installed in Windows XP.

I have noticed the version of Windows Defender in Windows Vista is
1.1.1505.0 whereas in Windows XP it is 1.1.1593.0. Should I be
updating the version in Vista? I cannot see any way to update the
version of Windows Defender in Windows Defender. Do I have to remove
it through the Vista equivalent of Add / Remove Programs and
download a new copy?
