I have a problem installing ALL updates, but here's a good workaround:

Start Win Updates

Use [Custom] mode

When you see the list of updates you need to install, expand [+] the
description

At the end of the description paragraph is a link "details," click this

A popup will open, and at the bottom will be a link to the actual KB article
for the update

In the KB article will be one or more links to download the Update, JUST
MAKE SURE TO SELECT THE ONE FOR YOU VERSION, like Windows XP SP2

Eventually you will be given the opportunity to [Download], use the [Run]
option and follow instructions, including reboot if asked.

This has worked for me every time even though auto-updates still fails
install.

That's not a workaround. Some of us use Custom install to bypass
Automatic updating. One recent benefit - no Silverlight crap.

Hope this helps.

Another possibility: I used to have a lot of trouble with
updates because they want to write temporary files on the last
writeable disc. In my case this is the USB hard disc for backups
and it is not bootable, to Microsoft's surprise! Despite my
attempting to bring this to their attention nothing has happened
and my solution has been to take the disc offline before
allowing the updating process. I called Microsoft's updates
"malicious" some time ago because of this but I was slammed by
humorless "experts" who believe they have a copyright on
"malicious".

You are correct, [Custom] is not a workaround for a _normal_ Win
Update run. I also use it.

My method below IS a workaround when Win Updates _fail_. It is
manually installing updates via the KB article.

Hope this helps.
