Updates with SP3

Okay, here's a very annoying update - my customer has a 7200GS video card so
that he can operate two monitors at the same time, for nearly a month he
hasn't had a single problem with the card until yesterday after he recalls a
Windows Update on his compter and BAM! It locks up his system entirely!

The desktop was working excellently last week, but now he had to remove the
card in order for him to be able to operate his computer. Does anyone here
have any suggestions as to how to bypass the updates and resolve this issue.
(Oh, he's tried doing a restore point, and the problem is still there!)

Need more information. Check the task manager to see if something is taking
up his CPU processing power. If it is Windows Search aka Windows Indexing
Service then uninstall it. You can disable Automatic Updates so that this
doesn't happen again but you will need to do selective updates
every-so-often.

Have you tried looking at his update history to see what the alleged bad
update was? Perhaps he downloaded an "updated" video driver (always a
poor idea to get drivers from Windows Update).

Hi Lern:

I haven't see his computer directly, he phoned me... but at least it gives
me something to look for...

Although we never set the updates to pull updates on video drivers...

I had some problems with xp and system lockups when running avg anti virus.
I am using avast now and it seems to be running fine.

You can start and stop indexing service. Why do you continue to say
'uninstall it'?

Interesting... you think AVG might be the issue with the updates and the
freezing up and lock ups... I think the customer is using AVG but it's
interesting that you mentioned that... I will suggest your comment to him and
see what he would like to do?

Thanks - Dave.

Hi PA Bear-

That's a good idea, anyway to send that information? I can have the customer
e-mail whatever you think we need to determine what has been updated. Not
sure if he's in today, but I can forward your e-mail to him and advise him to
send you the data so that you can look at what has been updated.

I do not offer free email support.

Assuming the update was not WinXP SP3 or another non-security related update
(e.g., a driver update), you or your customer could...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB999999).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Had no idea that these sites existed for issues such as this. Hopefully it
will assist us in determining if we can fix the problem. Otherwise, it may
appear that he is stuck with the issue of updates causing a severe affect on
the OS and drivers of the video card.
