Updates screw-up

B

Ben Stevenson

My Vista PC on IE7 downloaded the latest 13 (I think) MS updates and the
computer came to a crawl after that. Everything slowed down to more than 50%
especially after watching graphics and videos streaming.

Went to System Restore and pushed back the system a week and everything came
back to normal and to good speed. But the updates indicator continues to
indicate updates (the same ones I think) available for downloading, and I am
loathe to do that.

But I know that if I don't download them, then MS will force download them
during my computer use, as it has happened before. What can I do now?

I do my Anti-virus and spyware checks regularly at least once a week. As
usual no virus seen and and only the regular low-threat cookies on spyware,
that I eliminate.

The same thing happened to my XP Pro laptop, which I also had to Restore
back a week, and everything is Ok and the updates indicator is on everytime
I start-up.

TIA

Go to Control Panel, Automatic Updates. Set Automatic Updates to "Notify me
but let me choose when to download and install" or words to the effect. When
the notification icon appears in the tray, click it then select "view the
updates" or words to the effect. You will be offered a dialog box showing the
available updates. Uncheck the ones that you don't want to download or
install, then select that you don't want to be notified of those updates
again, and you won't.

I just did that yesterday before seeing this post.
I was sick of it restarting Windows overnight, thus waking the computer from
"sleep", and so losing items in the recycle bin & recent files in Word.

However, I do have a problem with Updates prior to this, namely 14 files
failing to install.
I was given 2 error codes.
My computer is working OK without these updates, and I am going with the
principle "if it isn't broke, don't fix it".
