What I don't understand is how I can be notified of this available update and have no entries
in the Event Cache folder.

The registry contains the info that SP1 is either ready to be downloaded
or installed. We don't want to go messing with it since you've already
cleared the Download folder just in case it had been previoulsy downloaded.

Mr. Green,

I installed the SP1. I don't know if it is the final RTM or whether
it is the RC Refresh 2. Jane C. tells me the final build number is
6.0.6001.18000. The version of SP1 I was offered is: 6.0.6001-build lab:
6001.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840.
I'll see what happens when SP1 is released to the public. If this is
the RC Refresh 2 I'll simply uninstall it and then install the final
release.
Thank you for all your assistance.

C.B.

You're mowst welcome. And thanks for providing me with much needed info
concerning Vista's updating mechanism.
That appears to be the correct Service Pack version, C.B. Not that it
says 'rtm' and does not include 'rc', which would indicate that it is
just another Release Candidate.
