updates hang

I have just uninstalled and re-installed MS antispy for the fifth time. Over the two months I have used it, I have experienced a continuing problem with the utility hanging during updates.

After I download the software, I reboot and take all the updates available (I update manually). I can usually update once or twice more and then the program will hang during a subsequent attempt. The update window will open and indicate it is searching for updates, but nothing further happens, even after 30 minutes. If I attempt to cancel the update process, the update windows will partially disappear and my entire system will hang until I use the task manager to end the program. Once task manager has been used, the program will not open again. Clicking the systray icon brings the "Loading" banner, but the program never loads.

My only recourse is to uninstall the entire program through "Add/Remove" and start again from scratch, only to have the same thing happen again eventually.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

XP Home, SP 2 patched, 512K RAM, 14Gb HD space available, SP 2 firewall, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, Spybot 1.4 (no TeaTimer), Norton 2004 AV

When the updates are proceeding normally, albiet slowly,
there is a message in the window between "Downloading
Updates" and "Looking for Updates" that reads, "Upgrading
definitions version XXXX to version XXXX." When this
hanging occurs, there is no such message which indicates
to me that nothing at all is happening. I have waited as
long as 30 minutes for something to occur. Are you saying
that it is, in fact, normal for the software to
periodically take this long to establish a connection?

I had this problem when I was using a dial-up
connection. I surmise that you are probably using a dial-
up connection as well. If so, the updates will take a
long time, as the files that need to be updated are
probably fairly large.

Once I switched to a cable modem, I haven't had much
trouble with the updating. The biggest problem is the
program not noticing my internet connection.
