Updates give never ending loop

For some time now, one or more updates in an auto-update package cause
my system to enter a permanent loop with CPU at 100%. The two main
culprits being cron.exe with CPU% fluctuating between 65 & 85 (typical
around 70) and crss.exe from 19-30) (typical 25). Even if I kill the
updates the CPU remains at 100% and I have to reboot. If I omit that
particular update, I can often successfully install the others in the
packet. The current problem one is KB923689.
Does anyone have any suggestions please?

I have something that may be similar:

(The f8, and last known good configuration did not work.)
The boot process goes past the bios, then the boot up of the loader (the
............ at the bottom of the screen when allowing an F8), then through
the windows 2k load (the splash screen with windows 2k with a progress bar at
the bottom), past the keyboard initialization (the lights on the shift
led's), through the final splash screen, and to the change to the light blue
screen where the pointer is supposed show. It restarts just before the point
where the pointer icon displays. There are no devices on this machine other
than a Raid card that is/was working fine.

Thx
