I had the same problem recently. Write down the error number you're
getting at the Windows update site then go to
microsoft.public.windowsupdate and see if there are any posts regarding
that number to see if there is a solution posted there. If there isn't
then just post a new topic with your error number in the subject line
and someone will probably be able to help you. My problem had something
to do with an updated Windows Genuine Advantage Tool. Once I
successfully installed that, my updates installed just fine. I'm not
saying that is your problem but it is a possibilty. I had to get
support from Microsoft to resolve the issue, BTW. The nice thing is,
they don't charge for update-related issues. Hope this helps.

The website is: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ . While you're there,
scan for updates. It may take a while. If you are unable to download any
updates you should get an error message in the upper right corner of the
page beginning with "0x"(no quotes), followed by eight more characters.
Write that down and go to the Windows Update group and post it there
explaining your situation and someone should be able to help you. If not,
then message back here and I will see what I can do. Regards, Bill

Thanks Bill again - I been doing a bit of exploring, and did eventually find
the site you mentioned - I have not posted yet - but when I do a search on
internet, everyone who has posted about the error has not had a response. My
error code is: 0x8009310b

I will post on that website and see what happens, but not holding out much
hope - I haven't a clue what has happened and why I can't get any updates.

When I looked at the event log - I noticed a hell of a lot of errors! I'm a
bit worried! None of them mean anything to me at all!

windows update agent:

savrt:

service control manager:
lines: 7000, 7001, 7009, 7023, 7024, 7026, 7031, 7034

line 1

DCOM:
lines 10005, 10010

IPMATHLP:

Can you help???

Hi, Helen. Here is part of an e-mail I received from Microsoft:
Suggestion 1: Verify the relevant Windows Update services

==================================

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the
open box and click OK.

2. Double click the service "Background Intelligent Transfer Service".

3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System
account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with
desktop" is unchecked.

4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile.
If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.

5. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic"
or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to
start the service.

6. Please repeat the steps above with another service:

Automatic Updates

We can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then
start these services again. If one of the two services is missing, please
let me know.

If any of the services is unable to be started, or you received any error
message when starting these services, please capture a screenshot when you
encounter the error message:

Suggestion 2: Clean up Windows Update temporary folder

======================================

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

Net start WuAuServ

If the issue still persists, please follow Suggestion 3 to check the
background programs.

Suggestion 3: Disable the software that can affect Windows Update.

==============================================

Some third party programs can change the permission of the current account.
This can cause the issue. Please temporarily disable all antivirus
components, Web Trap component of PC-cillin, Surfin Guard Pro, download
accelerators/enhancements, Download Accelerator Plus, spyware applications
and other
similar programs.

To protect the system from being infected when the firewall program is
disabled, we can enable the built-in Internet Connection Firewall (ICF):

a. Click Start, click the Control Panel, double-click Networking and
Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.

b. Right-click the connection where you would like to enable the ICF, and
then click Properties.

c. On the Advanced tab, click the box to select the option to protect my
computer or network.
I had to try these suggestions a few times in order to get the updates but
finally it worked. Also, here's a link you may find useful:

Here's another: http://www.annoyances.org/

I hope you find this information useful. Regards, Bill
