Hello
Just last week I restored XP and since then when on-line I get the
'updates downloading' icon in my task bar.
I presume it finishes, but, the icon disappears and no 'updates are
ready to be installed' message box appears
Going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com to check if the updates have
been installed shows they haven't?

Got sp1 installed

Anyone know what's wrong and how to fix please

Install them from the windows update website. Sounds like your connection
or the server is timing out on the auto-update.

Tried that, but the windows update website says
'Windows Update did not find any driver updates for your computer'
'Windows Update did not find any critical updates for your computer'

So does that mean that the updates have been installed?
As I write 'the updates downloading' icon in my task bar is showing
another download coming in ?

Windows must have been storing the updates until they were all
downloaded, as this download installed fine?

Like I said, sounds like the server was timing out, probably because it was
overloaded or your connection was slow. When it times out the partial
download is saved and the update goes away. Then it tries again later and
finishes where it left off.
