My copnnection to internet is through modem but also I
have a stellite service which I use for receiving and
downloading files through inter net which give me an speed
of upto 100MBPS. Unfortunately when ever I download the
updates from microsoft windows update section, the speed of
download comedown to my modem speed which is like 4 to 6
KBPS.At the same time if I download from any other site on
the net my download speed is about 100MBPS as my satellite
internet connection is. Can anybody please advise me when
downloading windows updates from microsoft windows update
site how I can make the windows update site to see my
satellite speed which is actually only for receiving
instead of my modem or at least advise me where and under
what title I can search for such a problem.

Make sure that all of your settings are set to 'detect
speed automatically' OR try to disable the modem when you
use the high speed, then re-enable it when you are done.
(Easily done through the control panel, net. connections.

I appreciate your response. First I cant disconnect the
modem since when downloading updates from windows update
site, the windows also read from my computer meaning that
I have to also send information to the Microsoft which is
done by my modem since my Satellite connection is only to
receive(one way). Also I dont see any option to detect
speed automatically. Is that somewhere on window or you
thought it should be included with my Satellite
software.Thanks again

I'm sorry, I did infact think that detect speed was in the sat software, and
I am also sorry I couldn't help you. Hope you get this resolved! :-) -Tony

That is the trouble - the Update system is checking the connection,
seeing it as a modem one, and feeding it accordingly. I suggest getting
the full version SP2 from
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2predl.mspx
- the download and deploy to multiple machines'. That is 266MB but is a
normal sort of download so should come through your satellite link. If
not, pop round to Staples or similar and ask for a CD (free) at Customer
services
