Update.ver is not correct during SP2 Install

MY pc has Windows XPP at SP1 with icon in the tray indicating that my Sp1 is
no longer supported. When I click on it and run windows update, it starts to
install SP2 then gives this error:

Update.ver is not correct

Install stops dead and returns to windowsupdate dialog box.

Please help....

Slipstream SP2 into your original XP Pro CD then do a repair install
with the newly created CD, back up important data first
