I'd just like to recommend this application. It's written in VB, but
it's _very_ fast.

Can this be set up to have dual panes?

No, it's tabbed but single pane. I never really felt or understood the
necessity of seeing the contents of two folders at the same time. However,
I'm aware that a couple of folks do. You can always try to convince me in
TrackerV3's user forum, but it won't be easy :)

Don, thanks for ver 4, the tabs work great. Best file manager bar none.

It depends on how you work at the computer. Some use double-pane file
managers so they can see both were files come from and where they go.
Others use copy, cut and paste a lot, and trust windows clipboard
functions. Others use drag-n-drop and have other needs.

When you produce a file manager you support one or more ways to work
with files and folders. It would probably benefit the users if you
described the ways your favorite file manager can work.

Does it work well with drag-n-drop style of work?
Does it work well with the clipboard functions?

How do you recommend people to use your file manager?
A lot of new, and old, users need better guidance in the art of
handling a computer.

Give them better tools, and tell them how to use the tools.

I just tried both version 4 and the beta, none of them work in win98se.
It says it cannot find gdiplus.dll.

Is TrackerV3 supposed to work in win98 or just in XP?

Hi Roger,

you replied to Doc but I suppose your questions are directed to me (Donald).

managers so they can see both were files come from and where they go.

Well, yes of course, but you don't mean I should do that here in the
freeware forum?
There's a website: http://www.trackerv3.com/
a user forum: http://www.trackerv3.com/forum/index.php
and an extensive help file that comes with the application.

Yep, very well :)

TrackerV3 is a single-pane file manager with an interface that closely
follows Windows Explorer's interface but adds elements like an
information/preview panel and (since version 4) browsing tabs, as well as a
very powerful search engine.

It does work in Win98/NT/Me/2000/XP.

Concerning gdiplus.dll (which is needed for the image preview, and is
shipped with XP but not with 98), please see:

A few sentences about how to use a program would be useful.

I tried a standard operation in TrackerV3. I used the tree to find a
file on my D drive, and then I dragged it into the tree and moved to a
folder where I wanted to move it.

It only half worked, the file was copied, not moved.
Probably the old windows problem, drag-n-drop results in copy when
tried across partitions.
Yep, very well :)

I still don't understand how to use it. Every copy/move operation
happens in the blind when I cannot see the destination folder and its
content. I prefer to have full control so I use a dual pane norton
commander clone.

Usage for common tasks like file operations follows Windows standards
(Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, etc... Drag'n'Drop). For further details please consult the
help file.

"windows problem"?... this is standard behavior. If needed you can force a
Copy by holding CTRL and force a Move by holding SHIFT (also Windows
standard behavior).

No problem, it's your choice. I copy "in the blind" since many years and
haven't been disappointed yet. There's always a point when you gotta trust
;)

Someone asked earlier in this thread if you can use Tracker with double
pane. You can run multiple instances of Tracker to achieve this, although I
don't see the need to do so. Resize each instance and put them side by side.
I just have two shortcuts in my Startup Folder.

No need for multiple instances anymore with v4. Define as many tabs as you
want, and drag/drop from the current pane to any tab.

If you are following this Don .... any limit to the number of panes ?

Panes ?? I mean tabs.

No limit, you can have millions of them. Of course, already 100 tabs à 10
pixels width each (1024 screen)will be a bit hard to handle, and for 1000
and more tabs there will be certain display difficulties if each tab is less
than a pixel wide... ;)

However, since you can load T4.0 with an unlimited number of custom
configuration files (by command switch), you can have thousands of tabs
distributed over hundreds of configurations with no problem.

Downloaded Tracker to try, (using win95 - please do not groan) and got
the familiar error message,

ws2_32.dll expects newer version of windows. Upgrade windows.

I run win 95 version 4.00.950A and every time I try to run the
winsock2 update, I get all kinds of sockets error messages, starting
with my firewall verio personal firewall.

Anyone know why I can not upgrade to winsock2 with this version of
windows? Lots of freeware seems to care.

Have you tried shutting down your firewall first?

Have you upgraded the Dial-Up Networking to v 1.3? I believe that should
be done before Winsock update.
