TrackerV3 (Advanced File System Explorer) v3.60

(TrackerV3 is an Advanced File System Explorer targeting everybody who
is looking for a real alternative to the Windows Explorer ... ...
another Explorer Replacement, alright, but before you get too sleepy,
check out these power features: Instant display of complete
file/version information for each selected file. Instant preview of
image (incl. PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF and many more), audio, and video
files (displaying detailed media information). Instant preview of
installed and uninstalled TrueType and Type-1 font files (displaying
detailed font information). [new in 3.40] Instant preview of HTML, MHT,
PHP files (including configurable server mappings) with printing
option. [new in 3.50] File Info Tips and MP3 Info Tips: extensive file
information (depending on file type and individual file up to 35
fields!) pops up when you move the mouse over a file's icon. [new in
3.50] Special MP3 service: instant ID3v1.1-tag view and edit, plus
automatic filename to ID3v1.1-tag routine. [new in 3.30] Instant file
view (ASCII and HEX) for all files, including text extraction from
binaries (BTW: the fastest on the market). Generates various sorts of
file system reports (to clipboard, file, and printer -- we're talking
about one-click directory print-outs here). Export extended file
informations of whole directories (or even directory trees) to
CSV-formatted files. [new in 3.21] Created Date, Last Accessed Date and
Attributes are shown right in the file list. Extended file find
supporting NT-only features, and including binary string search.
Multiple location search (find files in all selected directories).
Column Width Auto-Adjustment. Highly customizable display formats for
file size and date information. For each file and folder, the (real!)
disk space used is immediately displayed. Remembers last folder
location and sort order. Browser-like history functionality. Can define
favorite folders. A large suite of useful commands added to the
standard file context menu, including Copy To, Move To, Copy Filename
with Path, Copy File Properties, Copy Large/Small Icon, Multi-file
Rename. Icon-extraction, multi-file time-stamping and
attribute-stamping. Full support for drag'n'drop and wheel mouse. Made
to handle heavy-duty jobs. Easy to install, and easy to remove.
Installing and running the program does not change your system or
registry. Easy to use, start working in no time (interface closely
follows Explorer standards). Small, fast, and RAM-friendly. Quick 24/7
support. )

I tried an earlier version of Tracker, and really liked it. But I wanted
a vertically split screen, with the preview pane to one side, rather than
at the bottom of the screen. Has a side-by-side viewing option been added?

Hi Jason,
Has a side-by-side viewing option been added?

No, it hasn't. Because it's not possible: a lot of the information provided
in the info panel is of a landscape format (wider than high) by nature.
There's no space to create a third (besides tree and list) vertical pane for
this kind of interface.

What's the problem with having the pane at the bottom, anyway? It's the
perfect place.

I don't care for horizontal splits -- way too awkward on my laptop. Way
too cramped. FMEdit98 has the viewing pane on the side, which is perfect
for quickly scanning a long directory of HTML docs. So I'll stick with that
unless Tracker ever gets a vertical option.

I use the laptop as a desktop. A lot of people do nowadays. I mean, why
deal with a clunky tower when a laptop can handle just about anything? One
of the rare things it *can't* handle is a program that doesn't allow a
vertical split, like Tracker. Apart from that, I can do everything on a
laptop that I can do on a clunky desktop.

Hi Donald,

I have a quick question for you. Suppose I have twenty .exe files. Ten
are compressed and the other ten aren't. Could Tracker find which are
the ten that are compressed and/or the other way around ?

My download directory has .zip files and compressed .exe files in it.
Can I do a search and exclude both ? You seem to have a not
compressed attribute search but it appears to only be for NT.
I use '98.

Bye the way, it is nice to see that one can look for files created in
eg. the last five minutes. Well done. That is very rare in file
managers. You might however consider offering a "user defined"
period in a future release. For example, I might want to find files
created in the last 7 minutes.

Thank you for allowing private use of your program. :)

Regards, John.

While it is possible in principle to distinguish Windows self-installing
executables from normal executables, TrackerV3 does not feature this in the
current version.

That's right. However, the compressed attribute is not set for those
compressed exe files, so that wouldn't help anyway.

John, may I suggest selecting the option for files created in the last 5
minutes, which will display, for example,
"Between 9/1/2004 15:36:07
and 9/1/2004 15:41:07"

Now just change the 36 to a 34 to point it to the previous 7 minutes,
before clicking on the Find It button.

This can be modified according to your needs.

Thanks Tom. Very clever. :)

As it is I have another program that allows the minutes to be set BUT
I thought that as Donald was good enough to offer a freeware version
for private use, and to post here, I would suggest something that
might improve his program and/or improve his sales.

Regards, John.

Yeah, I'm totally into sales-increasing suggestions! Post them to the
forum... it's where suggestors use to hang out.

Heh!

Donald, just posting here to say that I very recently tried
TrackerV3 and it has the fastest searching I have ever seen (apart
from those apps which have pre-compiled indexes).

Luverrrrly product! Well done.

How does TrackerV3 go so fast? It seems to do a bit of work when it
is launched and when a chosen search directory is changed.

Is it reading in directory info and setting up an index?

Hi Franklin,

no, there's neither preparatory work at launch time nor any indexing or
caching (apart from the file access caching done by the OS, of course -- you
will have noted that first time searches at a given location are much slower
than all following searches: that's OS caching at work). It's just a well
done algorithm, I suppose. You know, writing for speed is my hobby!

Say, can I quote you with "TrackerV3 has the fastest searching I have ever
seen." -- it's such a powerful statement!

You certainly can quote me. I have not seen anything like TracherV3 for
speed. Although I do make the exception of those search utilities which use
pre-compiled indexes (one example, albeitit of a text searcher, is
Sleuthhound).

I have a slow PC and I notice slow and fast!
