after doing some installs/uninstalls and recoveries, I see that the status,
in the windows help update history screen does not match the display of
installed updates in "add/remove programs".

the status in the history screen shows "failed" but in the add/remove it
says the update is installed.

which one is correct or is there another way to confirm updates are in fact
installed and working?

so you are saying the update window is correct and the add/remove dialog is
incorrect ?

Microsoft has a free tool available that will check the status of all the
Hotfixes that have been installed. See the following article for the
details.

Qfecheck.exe Verifies the Installation of Windows 2000 and Windows XP

how is this activated-- from the run dialog I entered

Qfecheck.exe /l :mycomputername.log /v

but it just flashes by and does nothing

You cannot use this tool directly from the Run line. Go to Run and type:
cmd and press OK. This will bring up the Command Prompt. Use it from
there.
