questions about installed updates

1. I have one update that is installed twice according to Add or Remove
Programs (with the Show updates checkbox checked). It is Update for Outlook
2003 (KB913807). One installation has the suffix OLKINTLff. The other has the
suffix OUTLOOKff. Is there a reason for this?

2. I have a number of updates that are listed as successfully installed in
the history, but they do not exist in Add or Remove Programs. They are:

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - October 2006 (KB890830) (shows as
installed twice)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (despite the fact that an update
to this SP is there -- Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version
1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903))
Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB891122) (yet there is another
update of the same type there -- Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players
(KB902344))
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB921580) (yet there is another
update of the same type there -- Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2003
(KB923095))
Security Update for Word 2003 (KB917334)
Security Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB916518)
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB918419)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB921566) (yet there is another update of
the same type there -- Security Update for Office 2003 (KB914455))
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB918899)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB917344)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - September 2006 (KB890830) (I
assume this one was supposed to be replaced by the newer one above)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB900725)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB925486)

All of the above listed updates are listed in my history as successfully
installed. When I use Microsoft Updates (Windows Updates uses the same site),
it tells me there are no new updates, and I see no way to reset the list so
that the system rechecks my computer to see what isn't there. Before I ask
the obvious question, read #3.

3. When I installed Office 2003, I used the wizard to check for updates
before finishing the installation. I got a list of 3 files, one of which was
Office 2003 Service Pack 2. Beyond that, there were 7 other updates that
required SP2 to be installed first. I installed everything. When I checked my
history in Microsoft Updates, I saw that there were 7 Office updates that
were cancelled.

When I looked at the Installed Updates on the Office downloads site, I got a
list of items that was more than 10. They are:

Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (English version) (I never downloaded this one)
Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (English version) (shown as installed in Add or
Remove Programs)
Security Update for Outlook 2003 (KB892843) (English version) (not currently
shown as installed in Add or Remove Programs)
Security Update for Publisher 2003 (KB894542) (shown as installed in Add or
Remove Programs)
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756) (not currently shown as installed
in Add or Remove Programs)
Security Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB916518) (not currently shown as
installed in Add or Remove Programs)
Security Update for Word 2003 (KB917334) (not currently shown as installed
in Add or Remove Programs)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB917151) (not currently shown as installed
in Add or Remove Programs)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB914455) (English version) (shown as
installed in Add or Remove Programs)
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB918419) (not currently shown as installed
in Add or Remove Programs)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB921566) (not currently shown as installed
in Add or Remove Programs)
Security Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB923091) (shown as installed in Add or
Remove Programs -- cancelled in the history)

Remove Programs -- cancelled in the history)

Remove Programs -- cancelled in the history)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB924424) (shown as installed in Add or
Remove Programs -- cancelled in the history)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB923272) (shown as installed in Add or
Remove Programs -- cancelled in the history)
Update for Office 2003 (KB907417) (shown as installed in Add or Remove
Programs)
Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807) (English version) (shown as installed in
Add or Remove Programs)
Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2003 (KB923095) (shown as installed in
Add or Remove Programs -- cancelled in the history)
Update for Office 2003 (KB923097) (shown as installed in Add or Remove
Programs -- cancelled in the history)

(The following may have been superceded by the one update that is installed
-- Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2003 (KB923095) -- and none are
currently shown as installed in Add or Remove Programs, and I didn't download
any of them)

Update for Outlook 2003: Junk E-mail Filter (KB870765)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB873362)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB890854)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB891067)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB892236)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB894384)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB896999)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB895658)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB902953)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB904631)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB906173)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB907492)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB905648)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB911961)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB914454)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB916521)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB917149)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB920907)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB921580)

As an aside, I first installed Office 2003 on Oct. 3. The copy I bought as
OEM off e-bay included a SP2 disc. I installed both Office and the SP2
contents before activating the product. When I activated it, I was given a
notice that it couldn't be activated because the product key had already been
activated the maximum number of times allowed. I complained to the company I
bought it from and they sent me a new one.

This time, instead of using the SP2 disc I used the installation wizard to
install updates off of Microsoft's Office Updates site. The second copy of
Office 2003 activated with no problem. I uninstalled the previous copy of
Office from Add or Remove Programs before installing the new copy.

I don't know what the SP2 disc installed, nor do I know what the uninstaller
left behind.

With the complexity of data I have (as shown in this post), I am at a loss
to understand which things that are missing shouldn't be missing, or what
things are installed that shouldn't be. How do I reset the installation
history so that Microsoft Updates can check my system to see what is and
isn't correct, and hopefully reinstall missing updates?

Try Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsa2/default.mspx

Install it and run it and it will advise what's missing.
