Update Rollup 1 for W2K SP4 uninstalls IE 6 SP1 icon

We've noticed that the MS Update Rollup 1 for W2K SP4 uninstalls the IE 6 SP1
icon. This can prove problematic when there is reason to re-install IE 6. I
have not seen anything in the Knowledgebase about this. Is this a known
issue? If so, how to resolve?
Thanks, Peter R.

Do you mean that the icon disappears from the desktop, or that it is
replaced with a new version? I don't understand how either could be
problematic, actually. Explain, please?

Hi. The IE 6 SP1 icon disappears from the Add/Remove Programs.

Have you tried Add/Remove Windows Components? I hate that snap in - it's
never clear whether what you check will be added or removed. There must
be a better tool! -- anyhow, if the component is not present, then
checking the check box installs it, and if it's present then checking
the check box uninstalls it.

Let me clarify. This has nothing to do with the Add/Remove Windows Components.
The Update Rollup 1 makes "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1" disappear from
the Add/Remove Programs list. Uninstalling the Update Rollup makes it appear
again. This must be some sort of bug. Any confirmation? Again, this is an
issue if we need to reinstall IE 6.
Thx,
Peter

No, AFAIK it's mot a bug. ...SP1 is a previous update of IE6, and you
don't need it. The roll-up includes it, that's why ...SP1 disappears.

No, it's not an issue, since you use Add/Remove Windows Componnents to
reinstall IE6. If that doesn't work, you go to MS's website and d/l IE6,
and install it. It will be in a self-extracting *.exe file. You will
have to use anither machine, and burn the file onto a CD so you can
install it from your machine.
Thx,
Peter

Actually, most of the time, you don't need to reinstall IE6. Make a
system back-up. When your machine is working as it should, go to
Accessories --> System --> Backup, and follow instructions. I make a
system state backup, but if you have enough disk-space, make a complete
back up. (You will need several gigabytes of diskpace for a complete
backup, and it should be on a separate partiton, or better yet a
separate physical disk. A system state backup takes only few hundred
megabytes, and can be stored in its own folder.)

If IE6 disappears or acts funny, just Restore the backup, and IE6 should
work just the way it did when you backed up the system state. If it
doesn't, you have very serious problems, and will need more than a Restore.
