I have windows xp home operating system on this computer. At Add\Remove
programs it shows 23 (hotfixed) with 3 marked (SP2) though SP2 is not been
installed yet. What is that about?

Using IE, if I go to Windows Updates, SP2 does not show up as an option.
Automatic Updates are turned off but shouldn't the service pack still show
up as a needed item? On my other computer that hasn't had the service pack
installed either it does show up as an item. Why the difference?

Is there a way/place to get the update without turning on the AU first?
There is on my other computer!

Thanks much

Start here: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If AU was enabled, you would have these V5 files already installed, Neo.
They must be present before SP2 can be offered to you.

Ok - Makes sense on this computer.

But - What about my other one? I can guarantee it's never had AU turned on
and yet sp2 does show up as an update option when I go to the update site.

Sorry PAB That link just takes me right back to the same Windows update as
when I use Tools \ Windows Update

Thanks WV - I just found that about 20 minutes ago. 266Mb??? Wow!! Almost
a 10 minute DL!!

I'm leery of using that DL since there is something obviously amiss with or
on my computer that caused sp2 to not be listed.

One of the info sites states:

Windows Update
1.. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

2.. Click Express Install (Recommended).
3.. If your computer qualifies, Windows XP SP2 will be one of the updates
automatically selected. Click Install.
4.. Review and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
#3 ?? Windows XP SP2 os NOT listed (nothing is). What does it mean "If
your (my) computer qualifies?

Thanks for the info-

But - how in the world is a common user supposed to know that?

If it's needed for SP2 to install why doesn't Microsoft install it first and
then get on with sp2?

SYMPTOMS
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is not available to install from
Windows Update and is not offered to you by Automatic Updates.

CAUSE
The problem may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

Your computer uses an Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron D processor

Run, and type msinfo32. Look for the line that begins with "Processor" in
the right pane of the System Information window. If your computer has this
blocked processor, MSInfo32 will display the following text:
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 3

Bingo!! Thanks

Quite a lot of items that were aimed at going into SP2 came out
independently first, with the SSp2 reference

There is a selective type of roll out going on, to control the load on
servers

I would get the free CD of it. Order at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
or it is currently on several computer magazine cover CDs, or in some
places like Staples (Customer Service)
